Hair extensions are an ideal styling option for those who wish to add instant length and volume to their hair or for those who want to make a short-term style or color change. There is nearly an endless number of hair extension types on the market, and if you’re new to the world of hair extensions, it’s easy to get lost in all of the different names and terminology. Real hair, synthetic hair, clip-in, fusion — how are you supposed to know which ones to choose?
In today’s blog from world-renowned stylist and salon-owner Tony Odisho, we’re going to discuss four different types of hair extensions, the differences between each, and how to choose the right ones for you. If you have questions, or would like to book an appointment at a salon where you can get professional hair extensions from Tony Odisho, contact us or visit our salon finder.
A Note On Human Hair Vs. Synthetic Hair
The choices for hair extensions can seem overwhelming, but a good place to start is by taking a look at the differences between human versus synthetic hair. Some people may not have even realized that some extensions are made with human hair while others were not, but it’s an important point of distinction. Synthetic hair extensions are the most budget-friendly, but as with all things, you get what you pay for. Synthetic hair extensions are made out of various plastic fibers that are designed to look like human hair from a distance, but that’s pretty much where the similarity ends. Synthetic hair lacks the luster and feel of real hair and it can’t be subjected to high heat (styling tools) because it will melt.
Human hair, on the other hand, is just that. It looks real, feels real, and can be colored and styled like real hair because it IS real hair. So, if you’re going to trust extensions to give you the natural, beautiful-looking style you want, human hair is the way to go. But, there’s one more thing to consider...Remy human hair versus non-Remy hair.
The term “Remy” is used to describe the highest-quality human hair that remains unprocessed and has the cuticle intact. Aligning and preserving the hair cuticles in a unilateral direction ensures your hair extensions will provide a natural look and feel that blends very well with your own hair. At Tony Odisho, we only use 100% Remy human hair in order to provide our clients with only the highest quality, professional hair extensions.
Clip-In Hair Extensions
Clip-ins are an easy introduction to the world of temporary hair extensions. They’re ideal for those who want to add length and volume or switch up their style for a special event without having to spend a lot of time at the salon. Sections of hair are attached to the underlying layers of your own hair using mini clips. The whole process takes only about five minutes.
The clip-in extensions from Tony Odisho can be colored and worn straight or wavy.

Tape-In Hair Extensions
Tape-in hair extensions are applied using a thin strip of adhesive to bond the extensions to your natural hair. This is considered to be a semi-permanent type of hair extensions and typically provides six to eight weeks of wear. Unlike clip-in hair extensions, you must have a trained, professional stylist to apply this type of hair extension, but the effort is well worth it. Tape-in hair extensions can still be applied in an hour or less and they provide a more seamless look compared to clip-ins.

Sewn-In Hair Extensions
Sewn-in hair extensions use long wefts of hair that are similar to clip-in extensions. But, instead of being clipped, they are actually sewn into layers of your natural hair. This method of application is the least-damaging of the professionally-applied hair extensions because they don’t require heat, glue, chemicals, or tape.
At Tony Odisho, we use a beaded weft method which involves placing beads into your natural hair and then sewing the wefts onto the beads. The result is beautiful hair that will last up to two months and the extensions can be reapplied two or three times.

Fusion Hair Extensions
Fusion hair extensions get their name from the fusion or keratin bond that is used to attach the extensions to your hair. The application is invisible and the extensions adhere easily to your natural hair. One of the biggest benefits of fusion extensions is that they are completely customizable, meaning that you can use just a few small pieces to fill in a particular area or you can add length and volume all over.
The fusion extensions at Tony Odisho are available in three different lengths, 40 different colors, and offer up to three months of continuous wear. Only trained professionals can apply them, and Tony Odisho goes one step further by offering a professional training academy for stylists, dedicated to extension training and certification.
